Nikken announces 2009 North America Convention details

Today Nikken announced the details pertaining to the 2009 North America Convention. Last year over 5000 Nikken Independent Consultants invaded Orlando Florida and were blown away by New Product Introductions, Entertainment, and Corporate and Field Leader Speakers.

About a week ago I found an energy drink (AloeBoost) to replace a product that was being discontinued by Nikken. Well after receiving my order I was cruising USAloe's website and realized that they have a nutrition supplement for better sleep called AloeRest.

Free AloeBoost Energy Drink

Nikken announced recently their intent to discontinue Kenzen RevUp on May 15, 2009, an energy drink manufactured for Nikken and quite instrumental in my loosing over 100 pounds, I have been searching for a replacement and I found a company in Carlsbad California, USAloe Inc.. USAloe organically grows its own aloe on farmland near the manufacturing plant in Carlsbad. They also manufcature their own products right their as well. So I went to the website and ordered a Free sample of AloeBoost. When it arrived is was a small little bottle similar to 5 hour energy in size. I poured the AloeBoost over ice and drank it. The energy I got lasted about 8 hours with no crashing afterwprds. Its natural ingredients have made for the perfect replacement for RevUp that I have been looking for.

USAloe is still giving away samples (you pay small s/h fee) to promote their product. This is a great concept that will take this company very far. So after I received my sample I went online and filled out a short survey about the product and was given the opportunity to get another free sample.

USAloe's AloeBoost is available in the convenient 2 oz bottles as well as a quart bottle. I'm not sure how long the Free AloeBoost will be Free so my advice is, if you are looking for an energy drink that is all natural USAloe AloeBoost may be the product you are looking for.

Although extra kilograms put you at greater risk of health problems such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, crash diets can deprive your body of essential vitamins and minerals.

2. Don’t sit around
If you’re trying to lose weight, do 45 minutes of activity every day. If you want to maintain your weight, 30 minutes of activity each day is fine. This can include activities such as walking to the local shop, cycling to work, walking your dog, playing outside with your kids or going for a swim at your local pool.

3. Eat loads of fruit and vegetables
It is common knowledge that everyone should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day. Try these ideas: · Add a handful of berries to your morning cereal· Snack on raisins· Make pasta sauces with fresh tomatoes and chopped peppers· Drink a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice· Have a side salad with your evening meal

4. Concentrate on the ‘good’ fats
‘Good fats’ are monounsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts and peanut butter, as well as Omega-3 fats found in walnuts, rapeseed oil and fatty fish. Avoid saturated fat, which can be found in many processed foods and ready meals. Try grilling your food, rather than frying it.

5. Cut back on sugar
People in the western world eat an average 21 teaspoons of added sugar each day. Cut back on soft drinks, choose a cereal that is low in sugar, and check the sugar content of ready meals. Try using honey as an alternative to sugar in drinks, yogurts or cereal – research shows that is a natural, nutritious antioxidant!

6. Switch to wholegrains
Evidence is mounting that people eat far too much refined starch (white flour foods). Health authorities are advising people to incorporate more wholegrains into their diets, such as brown rice, wholegrain wheat, whole oats and rye. 7. Drink alcohol in moderation
Alcohol can affect nearly every part of the body, and if consumed in high volumes on a regular basis, can result in premature death. Health authorities advise that men should not exceed three to four units, and women should not exceed two to three units each day.

A Global Challenge to Improve Air Quality

The challenge was set recently as the WHO unveiled its new Air Quality Guidelines, which featured dramatically lower standards for levels of pollutants.

The WHO believes that reducing levels of a type of pollutant known as PM10 could reduce deaths in polluted cities by as much as 15 per cent every year. The Air Quality Guidelines also substantially lower the recommended limits of ozone and sulphur dioxide.

Another 2 pounds bite the dust

Well another 2 pounds down the drain or wherever they went. Been working incredibly hard at the gym this last month. I am going to get dunked for an accurate reading of my body fat/lean muscle/organs and such as well as a test to see how many calories I burn just living and breathing. That is going to happen in the middle of the month. Once I get the results I will be sure to post them here.

Well I have a great story to share with everyone. For years I have been telling people about the Nikken sleep system. One of the products in the sleep system is a Nikken comforter complete with magnets and Far Infrared technology. The Nikken dream comforter was off the bed because it needed to be cleaned. After a hard leg workout at the gym, actually the second day after the workout I awoke to not being able to walk because my muscles were so tight and sore in my calf muscles. Well I remembered hearing about how the comforter had helped people by getting rid of acid. So I am thinking the soreness in my legs was the lactic acid buildup from working out. (if I am not correct in my research someone please let me know.) I remember showing people a demonstration where we would take a lemon and place half of it wrapped in the comforter and the other half on the counter, and after a wellness home preview we would taste the lemon pieces and the one in the comforter wasn't as acidic as the one on the counter. Well I washed the comforter that day and wrapped it around my legs soon as it was dry. Woke up the next day legs fine and dandy. I am sure to always have a clean comforter after my workouts now. And since then I haven't had the problem since.

Weight loss on track again

Well as of today my total weight loss is 103 pounds. You may be wondering why is the weight loss going so slow. I know thats what I am thinking, but in reality it took years to put on the weight, and if i can take it all off in less than 2 years then I think that is not bad at all. I'll just keep at it, eating right, exercising, and utilizing my Nikken wellness home.

As for my previous posts and goals of getting down to 190 pounds. After some testing at the gym we discovered my lean body mass is at about 182 pounds (give or take a few). Which means for me to get to 190 my body fat percentage would be really really low. A trainer at the gym that I am consulting with would like me to add 8 to 10 more pounds of lean muscle mass putting me at 190 pounds of lean body mass. At 15% Body fat my total weight would be 225 pounds. So close I can smell success.

This week we rented "The Pursuit of Happyness". Yes we know Happyness is mispelled. Watch the movie and you will understand.

This movie stars Rapper turned Actor Will Smith, appearing for the first time opposite his real-life son Jaden Smith. Set in early-'80s San Francisco, the film charts the hard times and eventual comeback of Chris Gardner, a suddenly single.

The rousing, true-life story of a single dad who went from living on the streets to owning his own brokerage firm is a 5 star must see film of the year. Very inspirational and family friendly.

Another pound bites the dust

Well its good to know I am back on track on the weight loss highway to wellness. Granted I only have a One pound loss to post this week. But it all honesty, it was a short workout week. We had some company in town and I only got about half a week of exercise in.

The Kenzen Body Balance Weight Management Program is still working easy for our lifestyle which is important in a weight management program. Combine that with the other products that make up a Nikken Certified Wellness Home and Good Health is close at hand. In the next few weeks I will be going into a little more detail about the different prodcuts that make a home into a Nikken Certified Wellness Home.

just when you thought it was safe...

Ok. So after loosing 100 pounds and 50 inches I apparantly got some complex like I dont have to work out any more to lose weight...WRONG OH SO WRONG... I just assumed by now my body was an automatic fat loosing machine. Well since hitting the big 100 pounds lost mark 2 weeks ago I havent lost another friggen pound. 8( Well that means starting Monday its back to hardcore workouts twice daily to make up for missed time. After all I have 40 pounds to lose by the middle of June.

Another tidbit of information is I was shopping for some new clothes size 36 pants (havent fit into those since high school) and I picked up a couple of 2xl shirts. Well i got home and tried on the shirts and they were like way to big. So i had to exchange them for just XL and they fit really good. Whats next???? Size 34 pants and a LARGE shirt. 8) I can not honestly remember the last time I wore a Large shirt and size 34 pants. Maybe Jr High... lol

Not only have I shed the equalivent of my neighbors 12 year old son but I went from a size 48 pant to 36 (yipee) i can shop at the great french boutique "TARGET" again....yeah. But more importantly my standing pulse has droped 30 points and my blood pressure is actually in the Normal range.

Well Im going to give the best presentation ever today. Wish you all could be there with me.

Little bit more lost than last week...no not the tv show

Well down just 1.5 pounds this week. I knew i shouldnt have used that .5 last week then it would look like a 2# week this week instead of 1.5. oh well. Ill get over it soon. Well the Nikken Body Balance sure has won me over and everyone I know. Its pretty evident that I will hit the 100 pounds lost mark my next weight in. So we will be celebrating next week a HUGE victory in weight loss...

Lost some more weight

Ok here's just a quick update on the weight loss. I lost another 2.5 pounds this week. Yes this is the first time i have ever used a .5 in the equation. I think my brain is shutting down or something. Maybe it wants this weight loss to be over so its pushing the limits of loss... So I am getting closer to being at the big 100 pounds lost mark I was hoping and working to get it done before the end of this month but...its possible i guess...i got 3 days still....nah - Ima go grab some pizza and ice cream.

Well, what seems like a long time 10 months is really just a short period of time in reality. Well my weight is now down to 238 pounds for a total loss of 93 pounds. 7 togo for the big 100 milestone. Its been a little rough lately. Im not sure why. But I will persist and reach my final destination of 140 pounds lost. Wheh - hard to imagine - still on track to hit the goal weight by my birthday in June.

Ive lost weight

Great Scots.... I’ve lost 90 pounds so far. Only 50 to go. As long as I don’t decide to lose more than that. Well I talked to some friends of mine this last week and I am fast approaching the point where I will weigh less than them. Imagine that, its crazy to imagine that it’s becoming a reality. I wonder when I will be able to run for my exercise. As many of you know my Weslo Elliptical Trainer broke after 2 months of use so now I am back to the treadmill. I put the incline as high as it will go and it kinda makes the treadmill like a tread climber (one of the newer fitness machines on the market) So please think twice before buying a Weslo Elliptical Trainer. If anyone knows of a good brand please post it here. Thanks. Well my goal is be lose a total of 100 pounds by the end of February, with 3 weeks to go I should be able to do it. Well thats it for right now. I'm off to play some World of Warcraft.

Well another week another 1 pound lost. I swear I need to be out of the house except when Im sleeping. I stand looking in the darn fridge and pantry just looking to eat something because it tastes good. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH it can be frustrating. I will have to step up my cardio by double maybe??? What I do know is that WESLO ELIPTICAL TRAINERS are JUNK mine lasted less than 2 months of use before it fell apart. I called Weslo eliptical trainers up and they offered to sell me replacement parts. The bad thing is I bought the machine 18 months ago not knowing the weight limit was 250 pounds. Well 18 months ago I weighed 331 and so I assembled the machine and put it in the office to hold my coat and hats. Thanksgiving time I was under that threshold and decided to use the Weslo eliptical trainer. It broke real fast. The company only offers a 90 day warranty (from the date of purchase) so be careful when your looking to buy a weslo eliptical trainer I would not recomend them and give weslo eliptical trainers a big fat thumbs down, zero stars out of 5. Weslo eliptical trainer customer service is shotty at best. The only good thing is the call center seems to be here in the US so you can at least understand the people on the phone. 8) Thats it for today. Take care and shoot for the moon. In case you havent figured out by now I am really upset that my Weslo eliptical trainer broke after 2 months of use 8(

Well Down 4 more pounds since I last logged in here. The weight is coming off a little slower than I hoped it would but none the less it is coming off. Down a total of 85 pounds using the Kenzen Body Balance Program. I am feeling great. I used some of my Christmas cash to buy a leather jacket size Xl only...8) I also stocked up on my next size of clothes. I have a special section in the closet where I store my next round of fashion. Size 36 jeans and XL shirts. I should be into the new clothes by the end of February.

On a down side my Weslo Elliptical Trainer broke after only 3 months of use. Hopefully they will send a replacement or the store will handle the exchange. Keeping my fingers crossed.

January 1st - Lets lose some more weight

Well here it is January 1, 2007. So far with the Nikken Kenzen Body Balance Program I have lost 81 pounds. Im still have 69 pounds to go and the target date to have lost the weight my 37th birthday in the middle of June. Starting with todays workout I will be increasing the amount of weights a total of 5 pounds. Doesnt seem like much but my goal is to add 5 pounds every month. I will also be increasing the resistance on my cardio bike and eliptical trainer for a stronger cardio workout.

Well here it is...Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas all over with and I lost weight the whole time. Im officially down 79 pounds with just about a week to go in 2006. Woooo Hooooo, lets go celebrate and have a good time. Ooops, man i love the 80's. Everything was sooo good then. Except my grades in school. So if your reading this and you dont get quite the best grades, know that there is hope for you. I stepped on the scale bright and early at 3am firday morning to find out. Dun da da daaaah. The scale went to 261 and came to a screeching stop. Total weight loss since April 4, 2006 is now 70 pounds. Its been an amazing journey so far and I still have a long way to go, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays coming up. I hope I dont have a food meltdown. Well Im off to catch my plane ride to Long Beach for the annual Nikken Independent Consultant Annual Sales Convention. Ill catch up with you all when I get back with some pics and whats new.

Yeah baby. Im back on track

Not gonna get you back. Ok enough flashing back to the 80's. The drum roll please. didididididid...Bammo, down 4 pounds again to 264. Doing lots of Recumbent Bike Riding, strength training, and I just moved my Coat carrier, ooops, i mean Eliptical Trainer from the bedroom to the back patio where my make shift gym is set up. Actually, it's coming together quite nicely. Im excited to start using my E.T. because it burns more calories than walking, biking, and weight lifting. I will start out by just doing as much as I can at the end of my workout. I cant imagine me doing that crazy thing for more than 3-5 minutes at first. So that is why I am adding it to the workout after I am typically done. Once my endurance gets better I will incoprorate the E.T. into my actual workout regimen. Well thats it for today. BYE

Vacations are not good when trying to lose weight

Ok, So I didnt lose any weight while on this last vacation to Minnesota. I will get back on track this week and put up the numbers next sunday that i can be proud of. Its the first of October and Im sitting here at 268 pounds. Just 7 pounds away from the halfway point of my weight loss journey. Just 7 more pounds till I will have lost a total of 70 pounds. The good news is I only have a quick weekend trip to Cali lined up for this month so the weight loss should be decent this month.

White Castle and ME.

Well a few days after my last post, we went to Minneapolis, MN for my cousins wedding. Right after we get our rental car I hear a commercial for White Castle Hamburgers. I have been wanting to go to a White castle Since I was in High School some 19 years ago. You all remember the Beastie Boys..."took her to White Castle" ever since then I have wanted to go to White Castle and try there famous "SLIDERS" but losing weight going to White Castle not a good idea but we went anyway. And I did a fairly good job of just having a snack. One slider and a chicken ring slider and 1/2 cheese fries and some water. You must understand that a slider is a mini burger but taste so great. Well I wanted to stock up on souvenirs maybe get a hat, shirt, bumper sticker, all that sort of stuff. They had nothing to sell me. 8( Then Gina told the manager that i had been waiting to come here for 20 years and the manager said "let me see what I can do." She came back to the table and handed me a bag and said "Shhhhh, keep it a secret" I ripped open the bag to find an official White Castle employee in "TRAINING" t-shirt. I was like oooooooh yeeeeeahhhhhh babbbbyyyyy. So i looked at the size "XL" *(&*^%*&(*^. what kind of a joke was that. Well. hmmmm. maybe ill try it on just to see how funny i look in it. To my surprise it actually fit. Ive gone from size 4xl to an XL it was a little snug and I had to keep my stumache sucked in a little for the rest of the night while I wore my shirt to the party before the wedding. When we got back from the trip durring the wash cycle, i forgot to take out my shirt to air-dry and now it fits me like a suasuage casing. well i figure loose about 10-20 more pounds and it will fit real GOOD. Big ups to the White Castle and there crew in Minnesota. Well I didnt weigh in this past Sunday because we were in Minnesota. So we all wait for the next weigh in.

Holy Cow Batman...Your not going to believe this one

People sometimes dont understand the power of positive affirmations. Let me share with you all something. By reading my previous posts for the last month in a half you will see that my weight loss hasnt been that stellar. I made the deciscion last week to lose 6 pounds this week. That was my focus, telling myself over and over and over that I am going to lose 6 pounds this week. Guess what. I lost 6 pounds this week breaking the 60 pounds lost mark. I am now up to 63 total pounds lost since starting this program. I just wonder why i had been telling myself to lose 4 pounds a week this whole time. I should have been telling myself 6 pounds this whole time and i would be that much closer to my goal weight. Oh well you live and you learn right. So from now on my focus is to lose 6 pounds a week. Every week that I am at my sanctuary some would call a home. Where i have the total ability to stick with my program.

Ok...the fat burning man is back on track. For the last week ending today the 10th of sept i have lost 4 pounds which is what Id been loosing every week almost consistently. I am still using the same program but I have started strenght training to go with my cardio. Ok only two weeks before I fly to go visit all my family and friends at my cousins wedding in Minnesota. In fact Im going to step it up a notch and shoot for 6 pounds this week, Ill increase my cardio because i read if you jsut do cardio for 20 minutes you are basically jsut burning the sugar in your blood or system or something to that effect so Ill start doing cardio in 30-40 minutes a time plus my strength training.

Time for the weigh in

I'm not sure what's going on. I haven't been loosing weight for so darn long I forget what's its like to have success on the scale. I remember the first time I weighed in that Sunday after starting the program I laughed for like 5 minutes because I lost 17 pounds that first 5 days. Now I almost cry (don't tell nobody or anyone ok) when I step on the scale because it just looks at me like. What...What did I do???? I am just a scale... So I've been stuck for while. I been in ruts before. For the last long time I been in a work rut, 6 and 7 days a week running a cell phone company. And I finally broke free of that rut. I know I can lose more weight. I still have to hit my goal so I can go on and help so many others that need to know it can be done and that they can do it. But I have to do it first. So I will keep on keeping on and hopefully next time I write it will be a celebration.

Well its weigh in time again. And I have to admit that before we boarded the ship all I could picture was a midnight buffet haunting me all night. With visions of a chocolate fountain with tons of stuff to dip, all I could eat shrimps, pizza and everything else that could have wrecked me. Well the reality is the food was excellent and proportioned what it should be. Big hats off the crew of the Carnival Paradise, If you ever thinking about taking a cruise I would highly recommend this ship that sails out of Long Beach. Click here for more info and booking, this is the company we booked with and were very pleased with everything. Breakfast buffet was awesome, lots of fresh fruit for me to eat. The ship also had a nice weight room that was underutilizied by most people on the ship. That was good news for me. I got to go in and get right on everything I needed to exercise. So here it is we are back home in HOT Arizona and I just got off the scale to not loosing or gaining any weight. Ok time toto loose weight. We have a wedding to attend at the end of Sept. Hopefully I can lose some more weight by then.

Hey Gang - Well, its been about 2 weeks since my last weigh in and by the title of the post, I need a lipo-sucker to suction out about 8 pounds of fat for me so i can make my goal for this two week period. Since we got back from vacation, Im not sure what has happened? I have stayed at the same weight i was almost a month ago. This is very confusing and we are getting ready to go on a road trip for another week. Well I got my shake mix and pill box loaded with all the good stuff. Lets hope that my next post doesnt have me going backwards and climbing back up the fat ladder. Uh Oh, not smooth sailing whats going on.

Ok, here is what everybody was waiting for. I just got back from a 10 day vacation up to Strawberry Lake in California. While I did get lost on a 4 mile hike around the lake and ending up hiking for over 3 hours and 8 miles. And while I brought lots of fruit and veggie snacks. I even had my Shakes at least once a day. I have failed. I lost no weight since my last weigh-in. The good news is I didnt gain any weight, and for those of you that know how hard it is not gain weight when everyone around you is eating junk food and bbq every night and then its down to the campfire eating s'mores. I realize that the trip was actually a success. It means when I get to my target weight, I should be able to lead a some-what normal life and keep healthy. Well its time to put the pedal to the metal for the next week and get back on the fat burning, muscle making, loosing weight like a maniac program that I'm accustomed to.

The Incredible Shrinking Man

Well I just got off the scale to 3 more pounds lost. My daily routine follows for those that are seeing this for the first time.

Soon as I awake I take 2 Kenzen Burn capsuls, I then ride a bike for 20 minutes, jump in the pool and swim for 10 then get out and make a Kenzen Protein Shake with 1 piece of fruit.

30 Minutes before lunch its another 2 burn capsuls and then a healthy balanced meal.

if i need a pick up in the afternoon I drink a Kenzen Rev Up engergy drink. This keeps me at peak performance mentally as well. It also helps with appetite suppressant.

30 minutes before dinner another 2 burn capsuls and then another protien shake for dinner with 1 piece of fruit.

After dinner I do another 20 minutes on the bike or go walking 30-60 minutes then time for more swimming.

Well its June 18, I just celebrated another birthday this week and boy do I feel great. Losing weight this easy, I still have a hard time believing it is happening. Well, its May 28th and heres my update on the weight loss. Its been an incredible 2 months. Its amazing that the weight is melting off me like a hot knife cutting through butter. 37 pounds is how much weight I have lost so far. but the inches are really melting away fast for a total of 12.75 inches total. With this type of weight loss I should be at my ideal weight by Christmas time. 8) What a present that will be. Great Health for the holidays. Something you just cant buy. Well about a year ago to date I had a dream in which I was running cross country just for the heck of it. I can actually see it happening in the near future. WOW. Thats it for now. Loosing Weight Easily

CNN.com - Will ephedra products return to stores? - Apr 15, 2005: "SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- A federal judge has struck down the FDA ban on supplements containing ephedra, a weight-loss aid linked to dozens of deaths, but it's too early to tell whether the product will be back in stores anytime soon.
The judge Thursday ruled in favor of a Utah supplement company that challenged the Food and Drug Administration's year-old ban. Nutraceutical claimed that ephedra has been safely consumed for hundreds of years.
Research shows that the amphetamine-like herb can speed heart rate and constrict blood vessels even in seemingly healthy people, but it is particularly risky for those with heart disease or high blood pressure or who engage in strenuous exercise. Among the deaths linked to the substance was that of Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect Steve Bechler, who collapsed and died during spring training two years ago.
The judge's decision was seen by some anti-ephedra advocates as falling short of an outright reversal of the ban, though a Nutraceutical lawyer declared flatly, 'the ban is gone.' The company said it is too soon to say whether it will put the product back on shelves.
Industry groups said supplements that included ephedra were once used by 12 million people.
Judge Tena Campbell's order prevents the FDA from stopping Nutraceutical from selling its product and sent the case back to the FDA for a determination of what are safe and dangerous levels of ephedrine.
The FDA was evaluating the ruling, but Health and Human Services spokesman William Pierce said the agency 'made the right decision from the standpoint of science and our statutory authority. This is exactly when the dietary supplement law should apply.'

Poor diet and physical inactivity kill 400,000 people every year

Obesity is quickly catching up to tobacco use as the No. 1 killer in the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) researchers. Tobacco is still the leading underlying cause of death in the United States with 435,000 deaths reported in 2000 (a figure that represents about 18.1% of everyone who dies). However, poor diet and physical inactivity rank a very close second with 400,000 attributable deaths in 2000 (about 16.6% of all deaths). This is a 14% increase since 1990.

“Americans need to understand that overweight and obesity are literally killing us,” said Health and Human Services secretary Tommy Thompson.

The CDC estimates that 129.6 million adults in the United States (about 64% of the population) are overweight or obese, putting people at a much greater risk of heart disease, cancer and other serious health-related problems.

The CDC measures two statistics when reporting causes of death: leading causes and underlying causes. Leading causes are the diseases that cause death, such as heart disease, cancer and stroke. Underlying or triggering factors, such as tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption, are the behaviors leading to disease and death.

The key to tackling obesity lies not in our 30-minute treadmill sessions crammed between lunch and answering e-mail, but in small movements that have been eliminated from our lives by modern conveniences, a University of Saskatchewan kinesiologist says.

Mark Tremblay, who is also the chair of Active Healthy Kids Canada, said the elimination of tasks as small as climbing out of your car to return a video, rather than rolling up to a drive-through video return slot, is contributing to escalating obesity in Canada.

In 2004, 23 per cent of adults and eight per cent of children were obese, Statistics Canada says.

"What we're teaching (kids) is movement is something you take like your vitamin pill in the morning," Tremblay said. "As long as Saturday morning you get your 45 minutes or hour of movement, then you're good the rest of the day . . . and that's not true."

"It won't ward off obesity and it won't prevent diabetes," he adds. The gradual automation of our lives, from escalators to ergonomically designed workspaces preventing employees from getting up from their desks, is depriving us of spurts of physical activity -- sometimes only seconds long -- that used to keep us shipshape.

Tremblay told a Saskatoon seminar Tuesday that if a person who lives for 78 years tossed aside the remote and got up five times per hour to change the channel during every hour they spent in front of the tube, the calories burned would add up to 20.7 kilograms of fat over a lifetime.
For parents who enroll their children in hockey or ballet, the scripted slot of exercise isn't enough, Tremblay said.

A study of 7,000 kids showed participation in organized sports had no effect on a child's chance of being overweight or obese, Tremblay said. But kids who simply went outside "to play" -- with no coaches, uniforms or medals -- were significantly less likely to turn out plump.
Our sedentary lifestyle has also been fueled by urban planning that forces families into the minivan for transportation, he said. In 1969, 50 per cent of children walked or rode their bikes to school. In 2001, only 12 per cent did, Tremblay said.

The consequence is children are becoming prematurely at risk for Type 2 diabetes -- as young as age seven. The recent appearance of this disease in young children is unprecedented, he said.

In attempt to prove the impact of regular movements, Tremblay is working on a study where children in school are encouraged to move around at times other than in gym class and at recess. For adults, it's not that 60 minutes in the gym on an elliptical trainer and lifting weights is a waste of time, Tremblay said, but it shouldn't be the only movement you do. "I think we do it to satisfy our conscience sometimes," he said. "I think we do it for a new year's resolution. I'm not saying there isn't some value to it in addition to everything else. My message is, (movement has) got to occur at a more fundamental level." A lack of time for exercise is no excuse when the typical adult Canadian spends 26 hours of their spare time in front of a computer screen or watching television, he said. For those trapped behind a desk for 40-plus hours a week, there are "games you can play" to stay active, he said. "Organize your office such that getting out of your chair is a necessity," Tremblay said. "Even your workplace and where you are -- visits to the washroom, visits to the water fountain -- any way you can put movement back in your life pays dividends." Many of these problems stem from poor consideration given to the health impacts of societal changes such as the introduction of the computer or urban sprawl, he said. "Now we need to advocate for a society that will allow us to have these healthy living opportunities," he said. "It's being constructed and prepared and fabricated in such a way that it's very difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle."

Historic research reports new hope for 80 million people with diabetes world wide. Published in Archives of Physical Medicine:

So begins a report in the May 5, 2003, issue of the Archives of Physical Medicine* that concludes:

“the present study provides convincing data confirming that the constant wearing of static, permanent, magnetic insoles produces statistically significant reduction of neuropathic pain.”

The researchers are quick to point out that “studies are needed … to confirm and extend these results.” And Dr. Michael Weintraub (New York Medical College Department of Neurology and Medicine, and lead academic in the study) warns:

“Not all magnets are created equal! As important to the results of our tests as any of the other control features – the randomization, the double blinding, the placebo control – was the consistency of the product technology.”

Outbreaks of waterborne disease are on the increase. An estimated 7 million people become sick and more than 1,000 die in the United States each year from waterborne microbes.

As with air, there’s a wide array of water purifiers on the market. The most basic include filtered water pitchers, which remove lead and chloroform and are sufficient for most people’s needs. But quality ranges from poor to excellent, and, ironically, the plastics can leach toxins into the water.

Pipeline-intake and under-sink water filters are more efficient and will improve the taste of tap water; reduce rust, sediment, and chlorine; and protect your appliances from corrosion. Some systems use magnets as a water-softening alternative to harmful salts. Icemakers can also be fitted with purifiers.

The Consumer Reports January 2003 issue gives the best marks to the Pur and Brita carafes, the GE and Pur faucet-mounted units, and both Kenmore’s and Omni’s under-sink and intake models.

Everybody knows that simple exercise is an effective weapon in the fight against weight gain and obesity. And almost everybody knows that one of the easiest ways to get exercise is by taking a walk.

But for Americans, a recent article in Time magazine reveals, walking has become an increasingly rare practice. The article explains why. It also includes statistics that highlight how very important walking can be as a contributor not only to our physical fitness and fight against fat, but to our overall health.

The June 7 Time story begins by explaining that walking began to diminish following the growth of suburbs during the second half of the 20 th century. Cities shrank in population and construction spread out over the countryside. The automobile became the only way to get around. It replaced urban forms of transportation: the streetcar, the city bus — and travel by putting one foot in front of the other.

That includes not only walking directly from Point A to Point B. Moving within a city by bus or subway also required some walking at either end of the trip. But when Americans acquired cars, suddenly every destination was no farther away on foot than the closest parking lot.

Obesity and hypertension

This change has had an impact on more than just our traveling habits. The Time article cites research on how the loss of walking as a form of transportation has affected our health. One study compared the results of physical exams on residents of suburban versus urban areas. Test subjects who live in downtown Manhattan — in spite of its reputation as a high-stress environment — actually registered lower blood pressure levels than those who live in a midwestern suburb. The latter were 29% more likely to have high blood pressure (hypertension). One difference? Manhattanites still use walking as a daily means of travel.

Another study investigated the lifestyle habits of Atlanta residents. It revealed a startling relationship between time spent driving in a car and walk activity. The research found that in a daily routine, every hour in a car adds an additional 6% to the chance of becoming obese. And the reverse is also true: every kilometer walked per day decreases the chance of obesity by 5%.

The trend continues

This mindset against walking is being passed along to the young. The Time article reports that the overwhelming majority of American children live within one mile of their school. Yet today only 17% of our kids get there on foot. Most are transported by bus or driven by their parents.

The reason, clearly, can’t be to save time. At a normal pace, a person can walk a mile in about 15 to 20 minutes. Waiting for pickup at the bus stop, or battling traffic in a car, is not going to reduce the time spent commuting by any significant amount.

The disappearance of this simple and accessible form of exercise seems destined to continue into the next generation.

What to do about it?

What can we do about the decrease in walking — the loss of one of the most effective means of keeping fit and healthy? One answer is to find ways to incorporate a walk into our daily lives.

Air Purifiers, Antibacterial Countertops, Nontoxic Bedding, and Other Products Promise to Make Your Home Healthier

It took almost ten years before Pam Rothstein—a doctor—decided her house was making her sick. “I couldn’t even carry a laundry basket upstairs,” says Rothstein, who quit her career in emergency medicine to cope with the fibromyalgia and chemical sensitivities she developed after moving into a newly built Darnestown home in 1987.

Research by Rothstein uncovered potential dangers lurking in her house, from the water she drank to the chemicals in her carpet, drapes, paint, and bedding. Even her electrical wires could be toxic.

Four and a half years ago, Rothstein got to work building a healthier home, becoming a pioneer in a trend that is catching on fast. She recruited Montgomery County builder Andy Rosenthal, who agreed to take the American Lung Association’s Health House training program and produce an 8,000-square-foot home in Potomac.

Rothstein worked alongside Rosenthal, researching materials and testing each one that went into the house for anything that might trigger her chemical sensitivities.

Today Rothstein, 53, says she’s 90 percent cured of her ills; her husband Bob’s back problems are gone; her teenage son’s attention deficit disorder has abated; and her two daughters are supremely healthy.

Rothstein figures the special features—such as coated wiring, sealed drywall, and nontoxic paints—added 10 percent to the building cost, but she figures she can make it back on any future resale.

Multiple-chemical sensitivity is a heightened reaction to substances that causes symptoms ranging from respiratory ailments to depression and anxiety. The cause, the prevalence, and even the existence of this and other disorders like fibromyalgia—a musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder—is subject to debate. But the growing consensus is that the flood of new chemicals introduced into the environment every year is making people sick.

“We’re on that edge where everybody is starting to realize, ‘I want to be healthy,’ and pretty soon everybody’s going to get proactive,” Rothstein says.

According to Consumer Reports, sales of air purifiers jumped 70 percent between 2000 and 2002. Interest is also booming in nontoxic materials and health-promoting gadgets.

CLEARING UP THE AIR

We spend as much as 90 percent of our time indoors, where, according to the American Lung Association, the air can be worse than it is outside. Some 50 million Americans suffer from asthma and allergies.

As yet, there is no whole-house system for combating air pollutants. Furnace filters can deal with the problem at the intake level. Because particles from things like pollen, mold spores, and bacteria do the most harm, the finer the filter the better. The most effective are high-efficiency particulate air filters that remove submicron particles. Filters can also come armed with bacteria-killing chemicals or an electrostatic charge that captures pollutants. Air ducts can be equipped with electronic air cleaners, but the devices may produce ozone, a known lung irritant.
Room air purifiers can combat airborne pests already trapped in homes, including dust mites, pet dander, bacteria from cooking fumes, toxins from cleansers, pesticides, and gasses from carpets and paint. There are hundreds of room units on the market, priced from $40 to thousands of dollars.

Quality depends on the fineness of the filter, the square-footage of the air circulated, and the clean-air delivery rate, which should be at least eight to ten room volumes an hour. Some purifiers rely only on filters, while others use negative ionization and ultraviolet light. UV is preferred, as it does not create ozone as ionization sometimes does.

Health organizations are reluctant to recommend air purifiers, citing the lack of research on their effectiveness. Steve Millett, with the Battelle technology research firm in Columbus, Ohio, says you pretty much have to be a rocket scientist to sort through them.

“There’s a lot of schlock out there,” he says. For example, Sharper Image’s Ionic Breeze air purifier is a top-seller and boasts several approval stamps, but Consumer Reports gave it a “poor” rating in its October 2003 issue.

Consumer Reports’ top-rated models for professionally installed purifiers on heating/air systems were the Aprilaire 5000, Trion SE 1400, Trane Perfect Fit TFE210A9FR2, and Honeywell F50. Best scores for room air filters went to Friedrich C-90A, Kenmore 83202, Whirlpool AP45030H0, and Bionaire BAP 1300.

The American Lung Association recommends cleaning air ducts, but the group cautions that doing so can stir up dust in the house, which should then be cleaned out with a good airing and vacuuming. The group also suggests changing filters frequently, vacuuming and sweeping regularly, and improving ventilation by simply opening windows and turning on fans. Roof vents can also be installed fairly inexpensively.

Banning toxins is another approach. Health-conscious homeowners are opting out of natural gas—believed to aggravate chemical sensitivity. They’re ripping out carpets, which can trap pollutants and toxic fumes. Carpets, paints, wood treatments, drapes, and bedding are increasingly available in nontoxic versions—void of substances linked to carcinogens or other poisons.

Other hazards can be found in some building materials such as drywall, which is commonly made out of recycled newsprint. Rosenthal sealed Rothstein’s drywall because she is allergic to materials in newspaper. Instead of mixing recycled motor oil into concrete foundations as some homebuilders do, he used Price Club cooking oil.
Vinegar, baking soda, salt, and other ingredients are healthy and inexpensive alternatives to toxic cleansers.

Schwarzenegger is back with new proposal to stop soaring care costs

SACRAMENTO -- For all the deadly foes he vanquished on the silver screen, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger finally may be meeting his match -- the growing medical bills of poor people.

In his rookie year, Schwarzenegger tried simply to slash the state's costs by $900 million, then backed down after roars of protest. Now he's back with a new attack, one of many experiments proposed by U.S. governors to cut states' soaring medical costs. Schwarzenegger would limit a poor Californian's dental work to $1,000 a year, steer nearly 1 million more people into managed care networks and make families pay up to $27 a month in premiums for their government-funded medical help.

But advocates for 6.6 million low-income, disabled and elderly California residents are again trying to slow Schwarzenegger as he maneuvers the plan and its projected first-year $12 million in savings through the Legislature.

While Schwarzenegger has to cope with the problems of the nation's most populous state, he's not alone among governors in fighting the spiraling growth in costs for Medicaid, the $329 billion federal-state program that pays for healthcare for 53 million low-income Americans. In just about all the 50 states, Medicaid costs are rising rapidly and squeezing governments, poor people, doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers.

California's annual medical bills for the poor have grown by $4.5 billion since 1999, and now rival the yearly K-12 education budget. Nationally, such medical costs have already passed education inside all combined state budgets, state officials report. Worse, as states have survived the worst of their financial problems, President Bush has complicated their struggle by proposing a $40 billion or more 10-year cut in Medicaid. Governors meeting last week in Washington told Bush their cash-strapped states can't handle such cuts without hurting their poorest residents.

The combination of state and federal budget woes "puts the Medicaid program in a very vulnerable position," threatening states, beneficiaries and providers, said Robin Rudowitz, senior associate with the Washington, D.C.-based Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured.

Dozens of states are trying to balance preserving the program with stopping its rapid growth. Rising Medicaid costs -- up 40 percent in the past five years because of job layoffs and higher medical charges with no end in sight -- are forcing draconian choices. Governors pressed Bush for more flexibility from their federal partners for cost-curbing experiments, an argument the administration said it is considering.

"At the state level, governors are being forced to choose between healthcare and education," said Raymond C. Sheppach, executive director of the National Governors Association.

Democratic Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen is trying to cut 323,000 people from his state's Medicaid system known as Tenn-Care, while in Connecticut, 13,000 low-income working parents are scheduled to lose Medicaid coverage this spring. More states are demanding co-payments from users, curbing costs of prescription drugs or simply reducing benefits. In an extreme example, a Colorado lawmaker has proposed that his state seize estates of Medicaid patients after they die to recoup the growing cost to Colorado taxpayers.

Schwarzenegger's plans for slowing growth in California's $34 billion version of Medicaid -- called Medi-Cal -- accompany a goal to cut welfare grants by 6.5 percent and eliminate automatic cost-of-living hikes in welfare benefits. The ambition, said Sandra -Shewry, Schwarzenegger's director of health services, is to design a new delivery system that gradually saves $254 million over five years rather than simply "cutting the Medi-Cal program."

But he's also proposing cuts

In January, Schwarzenegger proposed a $111.7 billion budget that would cap dental benefits at $1,000 a year. Many states already cap such spending, as do private sector health plans. Of California's 3 million Medi-Cal dental patients, administration officials said, fewer than 100,000 had dental bills last year higher than $1,000. The budget also proposed that at least 550,000 Medi-Cal patients with incomes above the poverty level begin paying monthly premiums for their care -- $10 a month for adults, $4 monthly per child or a $27 family maximum.

More people are turning to nonmedical care practices

Janet Janszen reclines on the table, rolling up her sleeves and pants legs. The room is exceptionally warm and the air carries the scent of dried herbs in the other rooms.

...She is among a growing number of people who are trying alternatives to traditional medicine like painkillers to treat and prevent certain ailments. About one-third of American adults report using some form of alternative medicine, with annual out-of-pocket costs expected to exceed $27 billion this year, according to a study from the Institute of Medicine. The number of visits to alternative-care practitioners already exceeds visits to primary-care physicians.

...She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about eight years ago.

"I tried many, many treatments at the beginning with my M.D. and regular Western medicine," Janszen said. "As I continued on this path, I turned to alternative approaches. Unfortunately, Western medicine -- I don't think they have a handle on it yet. Basically, they treat the symptoms. If there's pain, they give you a pain pill."

...Roger Anderson said the biggest shift that will drive alternative medicine is yet to happen. People still go to the doctor for what he calls "sickness care" more than "health care." Alternative medicine will grow even more when people start thinking of it as part of prevention, rather than a last-ditch effort toward feeling better once they're already sick.

Its absolutly amazing to me how closed minded some people can be. If you take a look at Japan and the health their country is in, by the way Japan was rated Number 1 by the WHO for Health. Then you take a look at our great country and we are ranked 37th. What is it that makes Japan so much different from the USA? They practice preventative care instead of sick care.
